This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that arise in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
